Salsa is a partner dance form that corresponds to salsa music, however it is sometimes done solo too. The word is the same as the Spanish word “salsa” meaning sauce/ spicy, or in this case flavour or style.
This developed as a mixture of: Son, mambo, Cha Cha Cha and Boogaloo. Currently the major styles are: Colombian salsa, Cuban salsa, Puerto Rican salsa, LA/New York style salsa. Of all these styles the most dynamic is Colombian style salsa from Cali Colombia - the Salsa capital of the world.
Salsa is a social and cultural identity, encompassing a wide variety of Afro-Latin/ Caribbean rhythms: guaguanco, son, guaracha, mambo and cumbia are what we normally call salsa. Salsa can also include chachacha, bolero, and many others, stemming from Afro-Cuban traditions such as rumba, colombia and yambu.
